Nowadays, no one takes screenshots by pressing the PrintScreen key and pasting the image in Paint. Special software made it possible to capture the screen immediately, by using a simple combination of keys. One of these applications is ShotTheScreen. Its main focus is simplicity, allowing you to capture the screen or a certain area instantly. It stores your snapshots automatically, in different formats, on a path of your choosing.

You only need to download a 439 Kb archive and unpack its contents before using the software. It doesn't need to be installed, so you can use it even on removable devices. The application is compatible with most Windows platforms and its system requirements are very low.

While running ShotTheScreen, you may double click its system tray icon to bring up a compact interface. It contains options for selecting a destination folder, a default name for the screenshots, a format and shooting method. The software can take snapshots on demand or you can set it to capture the screen continuously, on a fixed time interval. It is also possible to set different hot keys for single or continuous snapshots.

You can minimize the interface to the system tray and use your hot keys to capture the screen instantly. The images are saved automatically in a folder, that is specified on the interface. ShotTheScreen can save your snapshots as JPG, BMP, or PNG images. If you want to capture a specific area of the screen, you may click an option, on the software's interface and draw a rectangle by clicking and dragging with the mouse cursor.

Pros

You can take snapshots instantly and save them in different formats. The application stores the snapshots automatically, without prompting you for anything. ShotTheScreen takes up very little disc space and it can be launched right after extracting its components from a Zip archive.

Cons

There is no option for resetting the grabber. If you want a full screen snapshot, you need to draw the rectangle yourself, over the entire screen. ShotTheScreen lets you take snapshots of your screen instantly, without making too many settings. You just need to use a simple combination of keys and the screenshot will be saved automatically.
